Mastering Emotional Control: Choose What Impacts You

Did you know that we can master our emotional control and choose what impacts us? Most of us, unfortunately, are not taught how to manage our emotions from an early age. Instead, we are expected to just "deal with it" or suppress our feelings.

However, mastering emotional control is a skill that can greatly benefit us in both our personal and professional lives. It allows us to have a better understanding of ourselves and others, make more rational decisions, and handle difficult situations with ease.

My name is Carla, and I’m one of the owners of 2lifeHealth. I felt inspired to personally share fresh perspectives—beyond the narrow paths we’ve often been taught since childhood. Life holds so much untapped knowledge, yet many of us have never been taught or guided to explore it. I don’t blame anyone for this; it’s hard to believe in what we’ve never been introduced to or explained.

I’m passionate about shedding light on how to achieve holistic balance in our bodies, minds, and spirits. By embracing positivity and exploring new ways of thinking, we can uncover entirely different perspectives that can transform how we live our lives.

So how can we begin to master our emotional control?

The topic is vast, but today I want to focus on an incredible aspect that I hope will help you, your families, and your children gain a new perspective on the situations we encounter in life.

The key takeaway is that we have complete control over how we choose to feel and respond when faced with triggering situations in life.

When we are born, we are like a blank canvas, with no manual to guide us on how to navigate the wide range of emotions we’ll encounter in life. The positive emotions make us flourish and feel on top of the world. But the negative ones can take weeks, months, or even longer to overcome. And let me tell you—this is not your fault. It’s simply because we weren’t given a built-in guide on how to reset and feel okay right away.

Positive experiences, like achieving or accomplishing something meaningful, boost our confidence and leave a lasting impression. We remember the sense of fulfillment that came with reaching our goals and how good it made us feel. Naturally, we try to replicate similar approaches when taking on new challenges. That’s how we function—we craft our own roadmaps to navigate life. By understanding this, we can intentionally work each day to follow those proven paths and move closer to new milestones.

But when we experience a negative outcome for the first time, it can be difficult to recognize or process the feeling. It’s unfamiliar, unsettling, and leaves us feeling terrible. This type of experience impacts us not just mentally, but physically as well.

For younger individuals, this might manifest as declining grades, a loss of motivation, or a noticeable change in energy and behavior. Sometimes, it even affects physical appearance, leading to weight gain or loss. As adults, similar patterns emerge. We may start to neglect ourselves, withdrawing from our families, jobs, and relationships. It can feel like we’re merely going through the motions of daily life, fulfilling responsibilities as parents or partners while remaining emotionally absent from the things that truly matter. In many ways, we become like zombies, existing but not fully engaging with life.

This is not our fault. We were never given a manual on how to reset ourselves and start fresh. My friends, what if I told you there’s a way to understand what triggers us, one that offers a fresh perspective on how we’ve been living our lives? It’s an idea I’d love for you to consider.

Here is how it works:

We are all incredibly insightful and capable of viewing what affects us through a different lens. We can learn to recognize when something triggers us and determine whether it’s an unfamiliar emotion we haven’t fully processed before.

For example, think back to when you were younger—perhaps a friend, boyfriend, or girlfriend rejected you, and the feeling of rejection felt unbearable. In that moment, it felt impossible to imagine happiness without that person in your life. If we had been taught to recognize and understand that the true issue was the feeling of rejection—rather than believing that this person was the one and only, love of your life—we would have gained a completely different perspective. With that understanding, we could have recovered so much faster, instead of being trapped in confusion about what was really happening.

As we grow older, life continues to present similar challenges. As adults, we often experience emotions triggered by negative actions from coworkers, bosses, or others around us. When we identify and understand the emotions we’re feeling, the next step is to recognize that these situations are not unique to one place or person. The same type of circumstances may arise in another job, with friends, or even within our families.

By acknowledging our emotions and reflecting on how they have affected us in the past, we can stop them from draining our time and energy. We can shift our perspective and understand that avoiding situations that evoke certain emotions isn’t about withdrawing from people, jobs, or challenges. Instead, it’s about realizing that we have full control over ourselves and the power to decide which emotions we let influence us.

With this new perspective, you'll be better prepared the next time a similar experience arises. You'll recognize it instantly and remember how, the first time, it prompted a certain reaction. But now, you understand that it’s merely an emotion. The person or situation triggering it may reappear in different contexts, but you hold the power to decide whether it’s worth investing your time and energy.

This realization shifts the focus inward—it’s ultimately up to us to decide whether we let these emotions take control and impact our lives unnecessarily for days, weeks, or even years. The power lies in acknowledging the emotion, understanding its recurrence in various forms, and choosing not to let it define our reactions. By saying to yourself, “I recognize this feeling, it’s not important, and it doesn’t affect me,” you take control of your emotional well-being, freeing yourself from being weighed down by repetitive triggers.

This practice allows us to regain true control over ourselves and shape how we navigate through life.
